To Set the Stage
"Life change doesn't happen without contemplation, study and bold action." - Brendon Burchard
Backstage with Debra
If you're one of the 287 new readers who joined us this month welcome! And a special congratulations to all the new Staging Diva Graduates in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. I'm enjoying connecting with you and answering your questions inside our online discussion group, Staging Diva Network.
Staging Diva hit a milestone this week with our 400th home staging job posting! I created the only job posting/referal service for home stagers in the world, and it's exclusively for graduates of the Staging Diva Home Staging Business Training Program.
In this month's newsletter you'll learn how there are many paths to a home staging career. Who would have thought the US Air Force would be one of them?
You'll see an excellent example of how the talents of a home stager have been used to transform an office area into a set for a TV talk show.
You'll also discover 5 of my favorite neutrals for home staging, read the latest staging business dilemma, plus meet 7 inspiring home stagers.
Do you love spring as much as I do? My garden is finally filling in after 5 years. It's a teeny-tiny shady lot, so there is more of a mix of greens and textures, than flowers (sadly).
My favorite is the water feature a large boulder that's been drilled to have water come out the top. It takes me about 2 hours to clean out all the rotting leaves and winter debris to get it going each spring. I finally thought of using a fish tank cleaning net which makes my job easier, though a husband would probably come in even more handy.
Perhaps a new "project" when my teen heads off to college this fall?
I hope you enjoy this issue of Staging Diva Dispatch. Please hit reply to this email and send me your questions or story ideas so that I can cover them in future issues of this newsletter or in the Home Staging Business Report.
To your continued success,
Debra Gould, The Staging Diva®
President, Voice of Possibility™ Group Inc.

Staging a TV Talk Show Set
One of the great things about using your creative talent to earn a living, and having your own business, is that you can do all kinds of interesting projects without having to ask anyone else's permission.
Many home stagers get into color consulting, interior redesign, holiday decorating or even professional organizing.
Another common practice is to work outside of residential real estate.
One Staging Graduate for example, decorated a bakery, I've done retail window display and styled a magazine photo shoot, and another student, Ana Hitzel, actually staged the set for a local TV talk show. She's also got a new AM radio show on decorating and staging which is a long way from working in the Air Force!

Ana Hitzel shares her personal experiece about what it's like being a home stager:
"After a 10 year career in the US Air Force, I didn't really know what direction I wanted to take with another career. Becoming a full-time mom kept me busy enough but something was missing.
I knew I wanted to have my own business but it had to be something I loved.
Staging has turned out to be the best choice I could have made. I love people, design and seeing the smiles on my clients' faces. I don't have to depend on a boss allowing me to take time off to be with my kids, and I make the money I want doing what I love.
The Staging Diva Courses gave me the tools and insight into how to start a staging business successfully. I was able to start without going into debt and implement a sensible business model that set me up for success. My company has been in business 5 years and I'm having my best year so far."

What You Should Know About Staging Career Paths
In the "old days," you chose a career, went to school and then got a job, with the obvious career path nicely laid out in front of you. We all know times have changed and most people have many careers in their lifetime.
I've been a jewelery designer, brand manager in major corporations, advertising agency executive, business consultant, communications agency owner, stay-at-home-mom, artist, home accessories designer, author and home stager. In that crazy order!
This was not a linear path, more like a meandering walk through different interests and passions over many years.
Home stagers come from all kinds of backgrounds and past careers. There is no single common thread, except a passion for decorating and interest in real estate.
Most home stagers seem to be also driven by a desire to have their own business because of the time-freedom it offers and a desire to make a difference in the world. And make no mistake, we DO make a difference. Whether it's helping:
- Reunite a family that's been separated by a job transfer.
- A divorcing couple move on with their lives.
- Adult children sell their parent's home.
- A growing family gain more space, and more.
> If you're craving a career change, I know you'll enjoy meeting the home stagers in this article who came from all different walks of life.
I'm a firm believer that "life change doesn't happen without contemplation, study and bold action."
Sadly, too many of us get stuck in "contemplation" while the weeks, months and years fly by.
At some point you need to study what you need to know to move forward, and then take the bold action required to change your career. You'll be amazed at how much more fulfilling life's journey is when you aren't stuck on the sidelines.
I'm really proud of the thousands of students who have taken my program and are now creating the business and lifestyle of their dreams.
Imagine how different your future could be if you took action too! Here's how to get started.

5 Great Netural Colors for Home Staging
There are so many articles about how it's important to neutralize a home when staging it so that it will appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers. This advice isn't always appropriate because we're not trying to appeal to "everyone," we're trying to appeal to the likely target buyer of that property (given it's price, location and size).
If we think of a 5 bedroom home in a sprawling suburb, that buyer is likely to have a very different aesthetic sense than a bachelor looking for an urban loft for example.
Neutral or Boring?
There's a fine line between "neutral" and "boring" when it comes to decorating and home staging. I rarely paint walls white or a whole home "beige" but when I'm using Benjamin Moore colors, here are 5 of my 80 favorite go-to neutrals:
With the walls providing a neutral backdrop, I'll punch up the rooms with colorful accessories like: art, vases, baskets, flowers, accent cushions, throws, table runners, placemats, bedding, shower curtains and towels.
I almost always choose a signature accent color, or two, to repeat throughout the home. This makes it more visually interesting (ie: less neutral), and ties the different rooms together.
> Read more about repeating a signature color.
Need help with home staging color or design ideas?
Both new and established home stagers look for ways to make their home staging jobs easier. That's why I created these two guides in the Staging Diva Ultimate collection. They are based on over 20 years experience decorating homes and what I've learned the hard way working with hundreds of staging and redesign clients.
Each volume will save you significant time because you won't have to figure everything out yourself. Plus, the information in these two resources will give you more confidence for your next client meeting.

"This guide cuts down the overwhelming choices for colors and gets down to what really works for staging. Great info on how to introduce wall color to clients who can be resistant to change. Debra gives you step-by-step information on how to suggest the best possible solution to attract the greatest number of buyers." Ofelia Doherty (CA)
