To Set the Stage

"The goal in life is not to attain some imaginary ideal; it is to find and fully use our own gifts." - Gay Hendricks

Backstage with Debra

How is it possible that 14 years ago I waved my little one into her first day of kindergarten and this weekend I said goodbye in the driveway of her first rental house in a different city then I live in?

It was really hard to drive away, but at the same time I know she's off on a grand adventure and my job was (and still is) to prepare her for it.

To be honest, I feel a similar responsibility to the thousands of creative women and men who read my articles and study the business of home staging with me.

My goal is to give you all the encouragement, information and tools you need to be wildly successful as home stagers.

There is nothing like earning a living doing what you love and I want you to experience how awesome it is to do "work that doesn't feel like work" because you're using your natural talents and gifts.

I've been blessed with the opportunity to support myself decorating my clients' homes to sell while raising my daughter on my own. And I'm proud of the 7,000 home stagers in 22 countries who are following my formula to build their own home staging businesses too.

In this month's newsletter you'll find out why Alfredia locked herself in a tool shed, learn about a casting call for 2 HGTV shows, meet 4 home stagers, see a staging of a pie-shaped condo, and watch a great video about perfectionism. Plus, get my invitation to 2 live events.

This is the start of a key real estate season so now is the time to get the information and tools you need to take full advantage of it. You did take me up on the home staging portfolio challenge I mentioned last month, right?

Here's to your continued success and Happy New Year to all our Jewish readers!

HGTV Casting Call for 2 New Shows

Have you dreamed of being a home stager on HGTV? Several Staging Diva Graduates have already appeared on TV and this could be your chance too!

I have to say from personal experience it’s really fun being on a TV shoot and getting to see all the behind-the-scenes of how they put these shows together.

The casting department for two HGTV shows asked me to spread the word about their open casting call.

Perfectionism Making Your Crazy?

I've been thinking about perfect careers for perfectionists and home staging is certainly one of them. After all where else can you obsess about the precise white for a door frame, or how the pillows are fluffed on a couch?

My own perfectionism makes me great as a home stager, but I can also drive myself crazy. As my daughter pointed out as we were leaving Ikea after I had checked the product numbers on our cart 5 times before leaving everything with the delivery desk, "It must be exhausting being you!"

I love how our kids call us on our stuff. This video perfectly captures the double-edged sword of being a perfectionist and how we can find more balance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and please share your comments at the end.

You'll love this video about perfectionism, especially if you're also a parent.
By the way, speaking of Ikea, it's great for home staging but only if you have someone to assemble everything cheaply for you. I built 12 pieces over Labor Day weekend and it was hugely time-consuming. But a great way to furnish my kid's first home.

She Locked Herself in a Tool Shed

With the kids back at school, many moms are thinking about what they'll do next too. Since we're at the start of the second biggest home staging season of the year, I'm hosting a free training session next week.

Here's what Alfredia Jackson in San Diego wrote me after she attended a similar event:

"Your conference call 5 Simple Secrets to a Home Staging Business: How to Make Money Doing What You Love was amazing. I wish you could know my thrill at being included. Your presentation and information were so important that I refused to be interrupted. No one knew that I had quietly snuck out of the house, planted myself in the tool shed, and I locked the door from the inside - I loved it. I devoured every word you said.

I appreciated your 5 secrets, and everything else you told us, as I am sure everyone else does, too. I look forward to living my dream with your expert help and teachings."

Condo Staging Saves Awkward Room

I love articles that prove home staging works, and this is one of about 100 I've written that showcase the projects of Staging Diva Graduates. It gives them publicity for their businesses while raising awareness with home sellers and real estate agents— which is good for all of us when we go out to sell our own home staging services.

Staging Diva Grad Nataliya Mitt of Pro Staging and Design (Toronto), found a great home office staging solution for this pie-shaped room. The vacant condo had sat on the market for 8 months with no offers and sold after Nataliya staged it. This is only one of the rooms she staged:
