Backstage with Debra

As this year comes to a close I'm realizing this marks the Staging Diva Training Program moving into the 10th year of offering solid business training for home stagers.

I'm very proud to celebrate this anniversary with over 8,000 students in 22 countries. If you're one of the more than 450 people who joined our community this month, welcome and keep your eye on your email for a special invitation to an event next week.

I was the first home stager to realize that spending days taking turns rearranging furniture was not the best way to teach people how to make money from their talents.

From what students tell me, this program remains unmatched anywhere else for its ability to teach you exactly what you need to know to succeed in your home staging business.

When you Google "Staging Diva" you'll discover that I've written more articles about home staging than anyone else.

That's because I've been focused on raising awareness of this field with the general public, as well as home stagers themselves, for more than a decade. I also created the only home staging job board in the world which lists over 400 projects.

In this month's newsletter you'll learn 5 reasons why staging beats interior design, see a highly succesful home staging project, discover why I compared real estate agents to wicked witches, find 2 dates you should set aside in December so that you'll be ready for 2014 and meet 5 home stagers.

As always, my mission is to help you create your ideal business and lifestyle. Since studies show 80% of "New Year's Resolutions" are abandoned within weeks, I'm setting a challenge for you as this year winds to a close.

Sit down to think and journal about how you'd like your business and life to look a year from now. Realize that you'll never get there unless you change what you're doing on a consistent basis.

Don't wait for everything to be "perfect" or for a lottery win to drop in your lap. Instead, resolve to get the information and support you need to create the life you want. That's what I'm here for and together we can make your dream of success doing work you love come true.

Happy Holidays!

Debra

Why Staging Beats Interior Design Business

If your goal is using your creative and decorating talents to earn a living, a home staging business is a much easier path to take than opening an interior design firm.

In addition to being an easier and less costly business to start, you'll have a larger target market, more creative freedom and faster profits.

And if you're worried that you'll have to do those fancy drawings and concept boards like you see on HGTV, don't. I've staged hundreds of homes since 2002 and I've yet to do a drawing for a client. Which is great, because (spoiler alert), I can't draw. This hasn't stopped me from also offering interior redesign and color consulting services.

In this article, I expand on all the ways home staging is a better business to start than interior design. You'll also enjoy the comments from new and established home stagers.

Kitchen Staging Boosts Selling Price

Staging Diva Grad Jodi Whalen of Pear Tree Home Designs, LLC staged a 4-bedroom Tudor style home from top to bottom, including this fabulous kitchen transformation:

Jodi's client was delighted when the home sold within weeks at 95% of the asking price, compared to the minimum of 6 to 9 months expected in that neighborhood.

She writes, "The Staging Diva program was worth every single penny. I made it all back in my very first staging job. I am thrilled to be a Staging Diva Graduate and I love that I can help people sell the most expensive asset they own so they can move onto the next phase in their life."

Proving that home staging is a great part-time business which you gives you lots of control over your own schedule, as a new mom, Jodi managed to triple her home staging business in each of her first 3 years as a home stager.

Real Estate Agent or Wicked Witch?

Inspired by the Hansel and Gretel story and a LinkedIn discussion about when home stagers get paid, I compared real estate agents with wicked witches in a recent article.

It was a bold move that attracted some hate mail from a few Realtors who were understandably miffed by the comparison. Funnily enough, none of them argued with my statement that they were stuck in a "crappy business model" that home stagers had no need to follow.
