The Staging Diva shares reviews of the favorite books that helped her reinvent her life.
If someone had told me even a few years ago that I'd be doing what I'm doing now, I wouldn't have believed them. I felt so STUCK!
I knew I was creative, but I didn't know what to do with that. There were so many ideas flying through my head but deciding where to channel my energy felt like an impossible task!
And, I was scared! Terrified of leaving the profitable company I had built over 10 years to do something completely different. After all I had a mortgage to pay. Who would take care of me if I fell flat on my face?"
I've read and been inspired by all the books listed below and I give you my mini-review of each one.
Whether you're planning on buying online or would rather go out to a bookstore, it's worth visiting the Amazon links below because you'll get a peek inside each book with excerpts, the table of contents, etc.
Enjoy!

This Time I Dance! Trusting the Journey of Creating the Work
You Love by Tama J. Kieves
This Harvard Law School grad left her practice with one of Denver's largest law firms to follow her dream of being a writer. She's pretty candid about her journey and I found her writing very authentic and inspiring. I REALLY love her style!

Time Off for Good Behavior: How Hardworking Women Can
Take a Break and Change Their Lives by Mary Lou Quinlan
Mary Lou walked away from her position as CEO of a New York advertising agency. The book tells of her journey plus stories of dozens of women who sacrificed for years until finding the courage to ask if they were happy with their lives and taking the break they needed to figure out their new direction.
A very quick read but I related to it especially because I came from that crazy world of advertising years ago too and also took a year off to reevaluate my life. I left the big city and moved to a small island where life was cheap to do it, but that's a story for another day!

The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity
by Julia Cameron
This book is a classic in the genre! I read it a couple of times but the real change came when I stopped working and made time to do the exercises she recommends. Don't panic, you can do it without quitting your job!
Julia's chapters seemed to anticipate what I was going through in my own journey, Recovering a Sense of: Safety, Identity, Power, Integrity, Possibility, Abundance, Connection, Strength, Compassion, Self-Protection, Autonomy and Faith.
Journal writing is a huge part of what she advocates. I've always been a journal writer myself and it's helped me work though many issues. By the way, I have a line of 4 different journals if you're interested.

Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow: Discovering Your
Right Livelihood by Marsha Sinetar
I read this when it came out in 1987 and probably went through 10 different business ideas between then and now.
I have to say of all the businesses I've run since becoming an entrepreneur in 1989, home staging and teaching others to run their own home staging businesses have been my most satisfying.
The author combines the story of her own struggle over 10 years to give up a secure career with stories of many others. She discusses how our own belief system stands in our way, dealing with resistance, resourcefulness and more. Great content but I connected more with Tama Kieves writing style ("This Time I Dance," see above).

It's Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now
by Barbara Sher
I share Barbara Sher's view that turning 40 is the perfect age to start to live your life to suit who you really are (rather than what everyone else expects). In fact it was my "big 4-0" that convinced me it was time to stop saying "what if" and actually do something about pursuing my dreams and creating more fulfilling opportunities.

Get Unstuck & Get Going On The Stuff That Matters
by Michael Bungay Stanier
If you've got that frustrating feeling that something is holding you back from accomplishing your dreams, this might be just the book for you.
It's really more like a kit or the grown up version of a flipbook, and it's a great coaching tool to help you experience personal and professional breakthroughs.
The "book" comes as part of a whole kit as seen here. It's awesome and I've found the author delightful to deal with!
