I always advise homeowners to clear away the paperwork "clutter" but I had not thought of the identity theft aspect. I also advise homeowners to put away the chopping blocks with knives in the kitchen since I have heard of a Realtor being attacked with a knife from one of those chopping blocks during an Open House. One time I walked into an Open House that was just beginning and advised the Realtor to hide the large Asian swords that were prominently hanging on the entry wall for the same reason. When I explained to the Realtor that it was for her own safety to put the swords away, she was very grateful!

Thanks for all the tips! You just can't be too careful in this day and age, can you? I've heard of people coming in pairs to open houses and keeping the realtor busy while the other one takes things from the house!

Gosh, these are things I haven’t thought about! In our area Realtors used to simply enstall a lockbox with a house key inside on vacant homes. Access to the box was by combination. Someone, probably an unscrupulous Realtor, came in and took out all the kitchen appliances AND my best red rug. Nowadays, a showing service which enables access remotely logs who comes and goes is more common here and would have prevented the theft. What is used in your area to gain access to vacant homes?

Another security tip a Realtor and I learned the hard way.
